Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. Those are the countries. It will be drought-resistant species, mostly acacias. And this is a fucking brilliant idea you have no idea oh my Christ
This will create so many jobs and regenerate so many communities and aaaaaahhhhhhh

more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Green_Wall
it’s already happening, and already having positive effects. this is wonderful, why have i not heard of this before? i’m so happy!

Oh yes, acacia trees.
They fix nitrogen and improve soil quality.
And, to make things fun, the species they’re using practices “reverse leaf phenology.” The trees go dormant in the rainy season and then grow their leaves again in the dry season. This means you can plant crops under the trees, in that nitrogen-rich soil, and the trees don’t compete for light because they don’t have any leaves on.
And then in the dry season, you harvest the leaves and feed them to your cows.
Crops grown under acacia trees have better yield than those grown without them. Considerably better.
So, this isn’t just about stopping the advancement of the Sahara - it’s also about improving food security for the entire sub-Saharan belt and possibly reclaiming some of the desert as productive land.
Of course, before the “green revolution,” the farmers knew to plant acacia trees - it’s a traditional practice that they were convinced to abandon in favor of “more reliable” artificial fertilizers (that caused soil degradation, soil erosion, etc).
This is why you listen to the people who, you know, have lived with and on land for centuries.

Fantastic.

The Great Green Wall, to resist the encroachment of the Sahara. Fascinating.

“When I took on Supernatural, I knew I’d be spending 10 months out of 12 a year on it. So there won’t be a lot of spare time for other things. Because I like what I’m doing now, I’ve always signed on for Supernatural first; save my time for that. Most of the companies know about my situation, so they work around that, giving me short term jobs. Even if there are other big opportunities, I’ll tell my agent not to let me know about them. Since I’ve chosen to stick with Supernatural, why would I want to know about all the other opportunities? I tell my agent to set the schedule as we discussed it, and I don’t need to know anything else.”

- Jensen Ackles, for Harper’s Bazaar China

I have so much respect for Jensen for saying this. I think he’s very aware of the criticism/opinions that have been going around saying that he should do movies and his talent is wasted on this tiny show that has been running for 9 years now.

Jensen could easily spend 3-5 months away from home instead of 10 and bring in a boatload of money all at once but that’s not what he enjoys doing. Right now he’s working with storylines he respects and admires and feels challenged by with a team he acknowledges as part of his family and a co-star he recognises as a brother.

Jensen has met fans and heard their stories about how Supernatural affected their lives: it stopped them from committing suicide or helped them through depression or brought light into a dying friend’s life. He’s heard these stories and he’s been touched by how he’s managed to touch lives by doing what he does — that he has a relatively small fanbase but it’s consistent and made up of people who would go to the ends of the earth for him and his show.

Jensen wants to make something he loves with people he loves for people he loves even if it means turning down massive roles like Captain America.

And I respect and admire that so much and that he’s so honest about it amidst all the talk. Jensen loves Supernatural, he loves Dean Winchester and he loves us.

The Turkish company Pugedon has recently introduced a vending machine that’s an innovative way to help both the environment and our furry friends. It releases food for the city’s stray dogs and cats every time a plastic bottle is deposited, and it allows people to empty their water bottles for the animals as well.

This wonderful service operates at no charge to the city because the recycled plastic pays for the cost of food. So, with a little financial investment, the simple machines do a lot of good. They provide a steady source of sustenance to the animals, many of which rely on caring residents to regularly feed them. It also encourages people to make a habit of recycling and help conserve our environment for future generations.

Put these everywhere
